UniswapX: A Gas-Free, Auction- Based Trading Protocol

Uniswap - brief history

Uniswap has consistently introduced groundbreaking innovations in decentralised swapping, beginning with Automated Market Makers (AMMs) in Uniswap V1, Time Weighted Average Price (TWAP) oracles in V2, concentrated liquidity within custom price ranges in V3, and now Hooks that enable the creation of customised liquidity pools in Uniswap V4.

Uniswap has recently unveiled an opt-in beta called UniswapX, an auction-based protocol that aims to deliver superior price discovery for user trades by aggregating on-chain and off-chain liquidity, while also offering gas-free swaps. While many of the ideas in UniswapX existed in some form in platforms like CowswapX, 1inch Fusion etc, the biggest DEX entering the intent space could be a game-changer.

What is UniswapX?

In current Uniswap pools (V2, V3, V4), users must create and sign swap transactions, paying fees (gas) to execute trades. This requires that the user’s hold the blockchain’s native token (e.g., ETH, Matic, Avax) to cover gas costs. Users may also experience slippage and sandwich attacks, worsening their trading experience.

UniswapX offers a more efficient and user-friendly approach. Swappers (users who want to exchange assets) simply sign an off-chain order. This order is then broadcast to a network of third-party Fillers (or Solvers), who compete to fill the order using on-chain liquidity sources like AMM pools or their own private inventory.

Through a declining Dutch auction, Fillers bid for the right to fulfil the swapper's order. The Filler who wins the right to fill the order submits the order on-chain and pays any gas fees on the swapper's behalf. This eliminates the need for swappers to hold native tokens or manage gas fees, providing a seamless and cost-effective trading experience.
